| The Story Behind Ringside Fitness |
 |
| In 1898 a project began with the construction of a red brick building on the corner of Bluff and Third streets in the city of Marquette. It is doubtful that the builder, a young man from Negaunee, realized he was creating a building that would become a landmark for many in the city of Marquette. Construction was briefly interrupted in 1899 due to his untimely death, but it sat for only a brief time before being purchased by Mr. J Kirkish and construction resumed. The 12,000 square foot structure came to life and began housing |

| occupants in 1901. The Upper Peninsula Business College was housed on the second floor for over 13 years, before becoming home to the International Order of Oddfellows #108. The Oddfellows remained there for over 35 years, closing their doors and moving all U.P. operations to it’s current location in the city of Ishpeming. Many other businesses enjoyed their time in the building including a dry cleaner, a tailor, a butcher’s shop, a general store, a home appliance store, a blind and drapery store, a paint store, a comic book store, Beauchamps Camera store, North Oak Manufacturing and probably most recognizable and well known, Altmann’s Typewriter and Repair. Trisha’s School of Dance, Queen City Dance and Marquette Tae Kwon-Do are a few other businesses that have called this building home in the past 30 years. |

In Early 2007, Susan Micklow of Marquette purchased the old brick building and Ringside Fitness was born. Her goal of “restoring the old while creating the new” has been the trademark of the entire project.
It was an obvious decision that the integrity and character of the building must be maintained. The building housed so many wonderful traits, from the original tin ceilings, to the hardwood floors and elaborate wood work, everyone involved knew that the end result must preserve the history of the building and Sue was proud to do that.
Ringside Fitness has become everything it was meant to be. No corner was cut in the making of this new fitness facility and from the minute you enter, you feel surrounded by the history of downtown Marquette and the excitement of what is being done there. |
